I think it is a safe assumption that all or most of my fellow Long Islander’s have just about had it with Winter. With one snow storm down, and another one on the way, I think we could all use a break.
Like most of us you probably dream of traveling somewhere warm, and tropical, but with the economy the way it is, many of us will have to keep dreaming. I am here to tell you some great news. You may not be able to jump on the next flight to the Bahamas, but that does not mean you can’t spend a weekend relaxing.
I want to introduce to you a beautiful destination right under your nose. The East End of Long Island. While most people will not even consider venturing to these parts until Memorial Day Weekend, for a select few of us these parts of the Island make for a perfect weekend getaway year round. I know you are probably rolling your eyes right about now, but hear me out. The Hamptons are beautiful this time of year, and taking a short trip there will prove me right. There are so many benefits to Winters in the Hamptons.
Let me start by stating one of the obvious benefits, Less people. You know the ones I am talking about, the tourists, the City Summer home owners who make the Hamptons come to life for two months out of the year. In Winter though the East End is a serene, quiet place. The restaurants are quiet, with new winter menus of locally farmed foods, and wines. The Vineyards are cozy and always a fun time no matter what the weather. The sidewalks are wide open and stores are quiet offering more personal help, and lower prices. The scenery is gorgeous with a layer of untouched white snow.
If those are not enough reasons to try it out this winter, then here are some more. The best part is the prices. The bed & breakfast, and luxury hotels cut their prices in half if not more during these months. Travelers can enjoy a luxury room for a very fair price. Many of these hotels have indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and jacuzzi tubs to accommodate guests on their quest for relaxation.
Before you get down on the weather, look on the bright side, you are living in one of the most desired travel destinations in the US. Give “East” a chance. Take the quiet drive (with no traffic might I add, during the Winter) stop by local deli’s, wineries, pick up a bottle of wine and some fresh fruits and head to the Hamptons, and enjoy your relaxing weekend of cozying up by roaring fires, eating gourmet meals and indulging in the scenery, and make the most of your Winter.
PS- Valentine’s Day is right around the corner….Just saying. (For an amazing romantic dinner, check out Red Bar or 75 Main, two gourmet restaurants in Southampton, with food that is to die for and a romantic atmosphere.)
